What does the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2022 actually mean?

1 June 2022

Winning the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade 2022 will inevitably be one of the major highlights of the year for Global Plant Genetics. To achieve this award, a company has to be recognised as being a leader in international business, demonstrating continued overseas growth over the previous years.

With 74% of the company’s turnover in overseas markets and clients in place in 33 countries, we were readily identified as potential candidates. Of course, for such a high profile award which is recommended by the Prime Minister and awarded by Her Majesty the Queen, it is not just overseas sales that are scrutinised. Other areas of business and good governance come into the spotlight, such as staff welfare, training, company policies and protocols, as well as helping and supporting the wider community, and so the list goes on.

These awards are not achieved by individuals but by companies who have a robust and loyal team of stakeholders from team members, clients, breeders, contractors and of course, family and partners.

The award is a tremendous boost and recognition for Global Plant Genetics as we continue in our quest to operate at the highest level in our specialised fields. We have a world-class Intellectual Property portfolio across our product range of berries, asparagus, grapes and nuts. The award lasts for 5 years and will undoubtably help to give kudos to our existing relationships and help towards us opening markets with new clients across our international footprint. It is also great in helping us to continue to attract the best talent in the industry. Our company is growing quickly, as is our headcount. It is the continued addition of high quality, focused and driven people sharing our vision, values and culture that will be imperative to us continuing to reach our ambitious growth plans.

The award was intially launched by Her Majesty The Queen in 1965 by Royal Warrant. The name changed from The Queen’s Award to Industry to The Queen’s Award for Enterprise and today, remains the highest business award any company based in the United Kingdom can achieve.

So, after the rebranding in spring 2022 and now winning the Queen’s Award, what next? After a party and a visit to Buckingham Palace to have an audience with His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, there are many exciting developments over the forthcoming year. It’s evident that our breeding programmes are performing at the highest of international levels, trials information and data is exceeding expectations and clients are scaling up with our genetics. The remainder of 2022 will see some strategic additions to our team.  This will strengthen our position, allowing us to continually improve the experience for our breeders and clients, while adding an increased focus to our corporate responsibilities in the supply chain.

We would like to thank all stakeholders for helping us on this amazing journey, positioning world-class genetics with world-class companies in every corner of the globe.
