Nematode resistant grape rootstocks. The grape division is a relatively new addition to the Global Plant Genetics’ Intellectual Property portfolio. We represent two grape rootstocks for Europe, including the UK from the University of California Davis. This long-established grape breeding programme is world renowned for its development of virus resistant rootstocks and new wine grape varieties. The UC Davis grape breeding programme is positioned in the fabulous wine growing region of Northern California.
The University of California grape rootstocks GRN1 and GRN3 offer wine grape, as well as table grape producers an opportunity to grow in infected soils without the need for soil sterilisation to control nematodes and associated viruses such as grape fanleaf. GRN1 and GRN3 control a broad range of nematodes such as root-knot nematode, dagger nematode, citrus nematode and lesion nematode. Both GRN1 and GRN3 rootstocks are also resistant to Phylloxera. These nematode resistant grape rootstocks will become increasingly important in the future as soil sterilisation becomes less used.
Grape nursery partners are being identified and licensed throughout Europe. Plant Variety Rights’ protection is filed, with extensive trials and further propagation both also in place.
Behind this, we are working on further new developments in the wine grape industry which could be ground-breaking for our clients in the future.
We are truly committed to the development of our grape division, having appointed Claire Donkin to head this up since 2019.

As a leading business in the raspberry sector, having access to world class raspberry varieties and advanced selections is crucial to maintain your current market position, as well as future expansion. Working with the Global Plant Genetics floricane and primocane raspberry portfolio, you could have access to raspberry varieties of the future, delivering improved flavour, high yields, excellent shipping capabilities and improved disease resistance.
Our expert team has many years’ experience in the raspberry market and a proven track record in delivering raspberry improvements to the produce industry the world over. As a company specialising in raspberries, you could have access to the varieties of the future wherever your growing region may be.
Raspberry varieties are a key element of the berry portfolio at Global Plant Genetics. We have aligned ourselves to some of the eminent raspberry breeders in the world in order to offer state of the art variety solutions to growers. The raspberry market is fast moving and requires high levels of cultivar innovation in order to keep up with the latest developments.
As a grower and or marketer of raspberries, you will have key varietal requirements such as improved flavour, berry size, berry colour, overall yield and disease resistance, among many others. At Global Plant Genetics, we can solve these issues from within the range of varieties we offer. In addition to the general fruit and plant characteristics previously mentioned, the raspberry genetics within our assortment cover all important growing regions from low to high chill.
In recent times there has been a large shift in raspberry production with most producers across the globe now preferring primocane raspberries rather than the floricane type. However, it is not as simple as planting a primocane plant in the spring, harvesting it in the autumn, cutting it down the following spring and harvesting again the subsequent autumn, and so on. Technical developments within raspberry varieties mean that many nurseries are now producing a range of different plant types. These include frozen roots, fresh plug plants, overwintered plug plants as well as a plethora of long cane types.
Professional raspberry producers can use the varying plant types to ensure a prolonged season of high-quality berries, often of the same variety. High quality and younger raspberry plants also have the associated benefit of producing larger berries. These then allow harvesting costs to be better controlled as well as delivering an improved eating experience to the consumer.
There is a high degree of scientific background that goes into the breeding of the raspberry varieties that we represent. This is best demonstrated by the use of genetic markers for elements such as disease resistance. It is anticipated that other markers will be developed in the near future to help select for other traits such as fruit quality and yield.
