Recent commercial field visits in the Huelva region of southern Spain have further validated the positioning of Tropical Blue as a blueberry variety designed for the very earliest production windows.
Across multiple grower sites, Tropical Blue is demonstrating exceptionally early seasonality combined with strong precocity, delivering appreciable early yields from plantings now in their first, second and third harvests. Importantly, this performance is being achieved consistently across both substrate and soil-based production systems, reinforcing confidence in the variety’s adaptability and robustness under commercial-scale conditions.
These results reflect GPG’s focus on disciplined variety development and real-world validation. Fruit quality has been a consistent feature across sites, with growers reporting attractive berries, excellent firmness and shelf-life characteristics aligned with the demands of early-season marketing programmes.
Supporting efficiency alongside earliness
In addition to early yield performance, growers are also refining management practices to maximise efficiency. In Huelva, the use of late-summer “pinching” pruning, typically carried out in August, is proving to be an effective tool when applied appropriately.
This approach is producing a more concentrated fruit ripening profile, enabling a tighter harvest window. For growers, this means fewer harvest passes per plant, improved picking efficiency and a reduction in overall harvesting costs — an increasingly important consideration as labour availability and cost pressures continue to shape production decisions.
A variety aligned with early-market strategies
The combination of:
Ultra-early seasonality
Strong early returns from young plantings
Consistent fruit quality
And the opportunity to improve harvest efficiency
makes Tropical Blue a strong option for professional growers targeting early market access with disciplined cost control.
As blueberry production continues to mature globally, GPG remains focused on varieties that deliver not only early positioning, but also reliable performance and practical advantages in commercial systems. Field performance in southern Spain is reinforcing Tropical Blue’s role within that strategy.
