“Developing farmers from South Africa were supported through a joint development project by The Jobs Fund and VKB Agriculture to source and import asparagus seed from abroad. Fortunately, we were referenced by a prominent local producer to Global Plant Genetics. From beginning to end we had a good experience in dealing with them. We have got very good advice and support from the company since we contacted them. They went out of their way to ensure that we could make the right decisions, not only regarding cultivar choice and quantity of seed, but general technical practices as well. The importation process was foreign to us, but in the end, it was made easy for us. The seed arrived on time, with phytosanitary aspects posing no problem. But most importantly, the quality of seed was excellent. Our nursery man, who has made thousands of asparagus seedlings over the years, said it was the best asparagus seed which he had ever seen. All in all, this meant that we were enabled to import good quality seed well within or budget and were able transplant good strong seedlings in optimum planting season.”
